Bleak House
It's bleak, all right, but what a powerful book Dickens wrote about the legal stystem in England. The reason I love Dickens, and he IS difficult to read, is because his characters are so very memorable!
Scarlet Pimpernel
Adventure, romance, mystery, intrigue, war, plots, revolt, it's all in this exciting adventure by the Baroness Orzcy. Oh, I do like this one.
For a totally different kind of book, I thoroughly enjoyed OPEN by Andre Agassi. What a great book. Talk about hard work and a father who pushed his young son relentessly. I'm not a tennis fan, but I'm a fan of this book...a great read.
Looking for something fun and light - I love Fannie Flagg books. She's southern and makes a person smile. Here are some of the books I've read by Flagg: Can't Wait to Get to Heaven; Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man; Standing in the Rainbow...and there are others. She's very delightful.
I love biography....I mentioned OPEN above, but here are some other strong books that have left me open-mouthed:
Same Kind of Different As Me
Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust
Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years
Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China
Oh, the truth is - I love books - books of all kinds.
So, here are a couple of books that I've also enjoyed.
Before going to China, I read quite a few books about China...I reread; THE GOOD EARTH by Pearl Buck; Snow Flower and the Secret Fan; Mao's Last Dancer; Red Scarf Girl. There are many good books about China; both fiction and non-fiction.
But, I also enjoy learning things that I wouldn't even know about otherwise....like the book OUTLIERS: THE STORY OF SUCCESS - absolutely fantastic book by Malcolm Gladwell. Oh, it's a must-read!
Let me just say this:
Hooray for libraries and for the KINDLE!
