I'm hoping that I can forget this book. And, soon.
It started off rather intriguing, but became very sorrowful and tragic and ended even more so. I did not enjoy it. Too many characters, too mired in sorrow.
It's the story of a murder in a small town in the 1950's. There is a lot of hatred and prejudice in the town, but the general consensus was that the murdered man deserved what he got. I did not like that the male protagonist was having a clandestine affair with his brother's wife; I hated that. The main female protagonist had been a victim of circumstances and had been a prostitute. But, she had a kind heart and had totally reformed. The murderer (the man's brow-beaten wife) was never brought to justice because the sherif had companion on her life, and lots of other sad things happened.
I will not be recommending this book to anyone I know and hope no one finds out I read it. HAHAH.
